The Right Breed
The breed of the dog that you select is important.

The puppy that you choose should be according to your tastes as well as according to your lifestyle. You should decide whether you want a small puppy or an adult dog. The breed of the dog that you select is also important. Some people want a pedigree while some prefer a crossbreed. All these points must be considered before you go to purchase the dog.

More than 200 breeds of dogs have been recognized in UK. Apart from these, there are a large number of mixed breeds and crossbreeds. Different breeds of dogs are meant for different purposes. This has lead to the creation of the largest number of species of dogs starting from the Big Dane to the tiny Chihuahua. Choosing a pedigree is sometimes better since it is more familiar and more details about the dog can be known before you take it home. They have a specific size, coat length, texture, character, and level of energy and immunity system. The properties of crossbreeds can be pre-determined up to a point but not completely. But it will be difficult to say which breed will be dominant and which one recessive. A cross between a border collie and a Labrador could either be submissive or full of energy and life.

Mixed breeds are otherwise known as mongrels and they belong to the completely non-pedigree variety. We can sometimes guess who the parents of the puppy are and sometimes it is not possible. Some people prefer this variety of dogs as they are unique and cannot be found everywhere. A dog belonging to a mixed breed has better health since hereditary diseases will be fewer.

Many people love puppies but they may not be the best choice for many people. It is better to have a homeless dog or an adult dog. Puppies are very lovable and you can make sure that they grow in a good home. You can train them well and teach them things. But this can take a lot of time since you will have to take them outside quite often to make them toilet trained. You will also have to watch them carefully to see that they do not damage anything valuable in the house.

Adult dogs that are homeless will usually be trained and also have the required social skills. But no one knows the past life of these dogs as they could have been treated badly by their previous owner and they might be very frightened and it will take time for them to get used to a new place. They could either be scared or nervous or they could be very bad-tempered and ill mannered.

It is also very difficult to decide whether to bring home a dog or a female bitch. Many people say that bitches are more loveable and can also be trained very easily. But many more say that bitches are not very interactive and that they stay away from others. Male dogs can be more outgoing. But neutering the dogs can change their personality. Male or female dogs can be a big problem when they are not neutered. A male dog will go looking for a mate during the mating season. A female bitch will have an unknown pregnancy and they can be tough to manage during that time. Neutering a female is more expensive when compared to neutering a male and this can be even more difficult if she is already pregnant. It is best if the breeder does the neutering process. A vet, a dog trainer, a breeder and other such professionals should be consulted before deciding what dog is best for you.

A breeder with a good reputation should be considered if you are interested in a crossbreed. The Kennel club or the secretary of the breed club will be able to provide all the details about good breeders. It gives a sense of fulfillment when you take a dog from an animal shelter and give him a new home. There are many dogs everywhere that do not have a home and are looking for one. Many would have been thrown out of their previous homes for no fault of theirs. Many shelters that take in homeless animals will assess the dogs properly and give you all the details so that you can find the dog that suits your needs and your personality.
